A Successful Day at Will Run for Cannoli 5K!

On July 13th, runners, joggers, and walkers gathered at Lions Park in Cheyenne for the 10th annual “Will Run for Cannoli 5K,” and it was a resounding success! The Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne, who tied for third place in the 2021 Wyoming Cybersecurity Competition for Small Businesses, was among the beneficiaries of the event.

In addition to participating in the race, attendees visited the CyberWyoming Alliance booth, where they received valuable information on how to protect their digital lives and learned about our cybersecurity programs.

One participant even came to the CyberWyoming booth with a concern about a suspicious text message purportedly from Norton Antivirus (a very commonly impersonated company). They wisely did not click the link in the text but were worried because they had responded to a previous text from the same number. The participant mentioned that their bank had offered a deal for Norton, yet they found it strange they had received no other notifications or payment confirmations. I confirmed their suspicions and advised them to contact Norton directly through official customer service channels and consider changing the passwords connected to their accounts. I provided information on similar scams, resources for freezing credit, and discussed how scam texters might increase attempts after interaction. We also reviewed how to disable read receipts on Apple devices to help prevent scammers from knowing when texts are opened, guiding them to Settings > Messages > Send Read Receipts, and toggling it off. While this isn’t always a foolproof solution, it’s a positive step towards safer online practices.

You can report scams like this and others to our dedicated phishing email, phishing@cyberwyoming.org, which was created to receive reports from Wyoming citizens. We can provide helpful information and include your report anonymously in our Weekly Hacker’s Brief, a public service announcement that informs Wyoming citizens about recent scams and helps them warn friends and neighbors about phone, email, and text scams.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported this wonderful cause. We look forward to next year’s “Will Run for Cannoli 5K”!
