Neighbor to Neighbor Advice During the COVID Pandemic

We (Campbell County Health) are seeing over 1000 COVID-19 related emails daily.  It seems like everybody now is a COVID-19 expert and (they) want you to read their e-mail, download their PDF, and use their tool.  Staff need to avoid reading every COVID-19 article as doing so desensitizes them to threats and reduces their cyber-hygiene.

Editors Note: This is great advice to anyone, not just staff. Limiting your exposure to the news is better for your mental health. Not is not a good time to become a news junkie.

The number one thing we recommend for working from home is to practice security in layers at home just like you would at the office.  If it’s in your budget, deploy a business class firewall.  At a minimum; ensure your workstation antivirus license is up to date and use two-factor authentication wherever possible.  As an additional precaution consider running a malware scan on a daily basis before beginning your work day.

Working from home has become a necessity for many of our clients.  We are trying to make the transition as secure and easy as possible by using our licenses for Desktop access and security on a month to month basis at a very low cost.  We have set many small business up with access to their desktops from their home computer, then have added Antivirus and DNS security to protect them from the basic attacks that we have been seeing.  This helps secure the local computer while separating and protecting the company network.

Upgrade your router’s firmware or purchase a new one. Networking tech changes periodically, and you should ensure that you not only have reliable hardware, but that you’re using the latest security protocols for your wireless connection.  You may also get a significant speed boost from newer technology!

Always treat any email attachment or link to file sharing site as suspicious, especially when dealing with financial information.  A quick email or simple phone call to verify that request or attachment is legitimate can make all the difference.  Look for conflicting information, names, or domains represented in any email requesting login information!

Whenever possible, enable multi-factor authentication on your accounts for banking, Facebook, or email.  A simple text message or authenticator app from Microsoft or Google can add an invaluable extra layer of protection when accessing your sensitive online information.

This whole COVID-19 crisis, and a lot of the associated cybersecurity risks, are simply fueled by fear.  The British have a great saying popularized by Winston Churchill during the way, which I think is applicable in these trying times: “Keep calm and carry on.”  Remember your training and always exercise good cyber-hygiene.

Use a VPN (virtual private network) when connecting remotely and be sure to use business grade online services like GSuite or Office 365 or Dropbox. These are the paid for version, not the free versions.

For added security, I would recommend 2 factor authentication on all business services.

Now is the time to be diligent about security and educate your employees and your customers to prevent being victim of a cyber attack. Cyber Criminals are looking to take advantage of remote users right now more than ever. Things are changing quickly and business owners are worrying about how to retain their employees and if their clients are going to pay them instead of their security. If you are working from home on a personal device, it’s important to have antivirus protection, Windows updates and 2-factor turned on for email even if you are using VPN. One of the biggest things I feel employees overlook is passwords. Having complicated passwords and turning on 2-factor for email is FREE, it does not cost you anything – it starts there.
