We Can Help!
Scammers have victimized many unaware businesses and consumers over the past few years.
One example was a business who regularly pays one of its vendors via wire transfer. This vendor had an undiscovered email compromise. The fraudster was able to imitate the vendor and send new wire instructions to our customer, who then acted upon those instructions. Our staff has an established procedure to identify suspicious transactions and followed up with a phone call directly to the customer to ask about the change in instructions. In this case, the customer verbally confirmed that the new wire instructions were good, and the funds were sent. It was sometime later that the vendor inquired about the unpaid invoice and the fraud was discovered.
If our customer had a better awareness of various fraud schemes, they may have done further validation of the email and prevented the fraud. This is one of the reasons we see the value that Cyber Wyoming brings to our Wyoming small businesses.
Local Involvement!
The trend for the FBI’s Internet Crimes Complaint Center database of reported cyber crimes for Wyoming is disturbing. In 2016, Wyoming citizens and businesses lost $913,941 whereas in 2023 we lost $13,746,109. First National Bank of Gillette is committed to supporting the efforts to increase awareness in Campbell County so our citizens and economy can thrive.
